Why you should study with SAHRA!
Share your story
Many of
SAHRA's members have participated in Chapter study groups. Here is
what some of them have to say about their experience:
I recently
passed the SPHR exam. It wasn't easy, and I knew that going in. To
enhance my chances of passing it soon became clear to me that I
should participate in the weekly study group. I made the right
decision. Certainly, it would be possible to study alone at one's
own pace and pass the exam, but for most HR practitioners the study
group is the way to go. Our study group was structured and focused.
Each week we tackled predetermined study material designed to
increase our knowledge in order to pass the exam. The work
experiences shared by the study group participants help put the
study materials in perspective. Our facilitator was particularly
helpful in emphasizing what to know, and what to study and how hard,
in order to pass the exam. He was also exceptional at illuminating
complex and unfamiliar subject matter. As you can probably tell,
this was a committed study group, not a social group. That being
said, we enjoyed each others company and had fun. I'm still in touch
with many of the participants from our group.
Good luck!

First, it
was an absolutely superb opportunity to study with an outstanding
group of highly dedicated HR professionals who wanted to grow and
take on the challenge of passing the exam. Second, it was a special
treat to get to know people in a study environment that either I had
not met before or were mere acquaintances.
Why would I
take on the exam? First, because I'm crazy and wanted to take on the
challenge!! Second, I very definitely feel it enhanced my knowledge
and will make me an even better HR professional. Third, I believe it
will further my career. I am one who never completed his BA and this
will help to offset that in the job market. Fourth, when I enter my
fifth career change to HR & OD consultant, I will have a credential
to highlight.
Why do it
through the SAHRA study group? First, I loved the concentrated
interaction that I don't feel I would get from a classroom
environment. Second, I would not have succeeded doing it by myself,
as I do not have the discipline to study on a concentrated regular
basis. Third, it was CHEAP!!
Plus the
facilitator came to the exam and cheer us on!!

I selected
the HRCI study group to prepare for the SPHR certification exam to
have a structured environment in which to review material for the
exam, as that is the environment in which I learn best. My
expectations from the group were met and exceeded for more than just
the study value. Equally as rewarding were the great networking
opportunities with other working HR professionals. I feel I could
pick up the phone and call any one of them with a question, and get
the benefit of their particular area of expertise.
The sharing
of experiences specific to the areas of body of knowledge being
covered helped with reinforcement of learning of some components
that some of us did not typically work with on a regular basis. When
taking the exam, I could correlate some of the questions directly to
some specific discussions that occurred during the study groups,
assisting with confidence about the answer and also aiding with
being able to promptly answer questions so as to complete the exam
within the allotted amount of time.
The
facilitator was great, engaged, and energetic. She did a great job
of bringing in subject matter experts. Despite some personal
challenges she met her commitment to the group, and still availed
herself to the group, to include leaving her home early on a
Saturday morning and coming to the test site to cheer us on at the
last minute.
There was
definitely a great sense of camaraderie that was an outcome of the
study group, that will last far beyond the exam. Also, I found it
assisted greatly with getting more "plugged in" with a greater
number of people, which helps with knowing more people to
interact/network with at the monthly SAHRA meetings.

I was very
pleased with the study group. In our study group, almost everyone
who participated had been working in the Human Resources field for a
number of years, in a variety of industries; many of the individuals
were definitely at the "Senior" level. In addition to the valuable
information shared by these talented and diverse individuals, the
fact that they too were seeking the credential added to the
credibility of working towards my PHR. Myself, only having been in
the human resources field for 2 years at the time we began studying,
I learned a great deal from the materials shared, learning what
others were doing to study, and by getting ready each week for the
"topic". I would highly recommend to others the study group as an
effective means of preparation.
